1. BCCI president N Srinivasan is set to be the first ICC chairman for a 2-year term beginning July this year.
The move is in line with the ICC structural reform which gives more power to the big 3 of international cricket India, England and Australia. India, which generates 80% of the game’s total revenues, will enjoy a permanent seat on a five-member executive committee along with Australia and England. The 3 will also pocket larger share of the ICC revenues from now on. All the full member countries (8 out of 10) approved the changes barring neighbours Sri Lanka and Pakistan who opposed and abstained from voting.
2. Sushil Koirala, leader of Nepali Congress, is to be the next Prime Minister of Nepal.
The breakthrough, ending months of political deadlock after the last year’s elections, was achieved when his party acceded to a six-point deal with CPN—UML.
3. N Ramachandran is elected unopposed as the president of the Indian Olympic Association.
He has earlier served as the chief of World Squash Federation. The election may pave the way for lifting of suspension Indian Olympic Association is currently undergoing.
4. Kumar Sangakkara becomes only the 2nd player after former English captain Graham Gooch to hit a triple century and a century in the same test match.
He achieved this rare feat while playing against Bangladesh where he belted 319 and 105 runs in the consecutive innings. Though he failed to break the world record of scoring most runs in a single test match by 33 runs. The record still rest with Gooch who scored aggregate 456 runs (333 and 123) against India at Lords.
5. The National Green Tribunal bans burning of tyres at public places to check its harmful effect. Many groups indulge in this hazardous activity to demonstrate protest or festivities.
6. Yuki Bhambri trumps Alexander Kudryavtsev of Russia 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to lift the singles title of ‘Shriram Capital PL Reddy Memorial ATP Challenger tennis tournament’ held at Chennai.
He also captured the doubles title with Michael Venus (New Zealand) beating the Indo-Slovakian pair of N.Sriram Balaji and Blaz Rola 6-4, 7-6 (3) in the final.
7. Indian Navy concludes international maritime exercise Milan 2014.
The naval exercise, conducted by the Indian Navy, has been taking place every two years since 1995.
Apart from regular battle exercises, the contingents were also trained on how to tackle disasters like cyclones and earthquakes through a seminar on humanitarian assistance and disaster relief.
Air Marshal P K Roy, Commander-in-Chief of Andaman and Nicobar Command, received the parting salute from all 9 foreign ships to conclude the event with a traditional passing exercise.
While all the foreign ships left for their countries Myanmar decided to stay back till February 15 to resume the joint patrol exercise with the Indian Navy.
Six Indian ships to feature in the event are INS Saryu, INS Kesari, INS Investigator, INS Battimalv, INS Baratang and INS Bangaram.
